In-Hyung Kim has called Paris home for decades and shown her work throughout the world. Her interest in hue, line and form as well as atmospheric imagery animated by figuration have led the artist through varied series of paintings. Her work at times veers towards abstraction and at others approaches a particular mediated realism. In her work on paper, Kim uses the textures of paint and graphite to give life to the texture of the paper’s surface. In these powerful, small format works, under ten inches square, a bird or plant may be featured, and the confident brushwork and bold marking bring fundamental form into action. Her expressionistic rendering of natural forms and light-touch give a freshness to her work that suggests each piece of paper has just been marked moments before the arrival of the viewer’s gaze.
Kim was educated at L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts, L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs, and L'Academie Grande Chaumiere Charpentier in Paris and has exhibited her paintings and sculptures in Europe and Asia. In 1994, API brought the work of In-Hyung Kim to New York City for her first exhibition in the United States.
